9/11/2023 0 Comments Sidekick 2 ekahau![]() ![]() Luckily, it’s way cheaper and easier to order an extra cable then spend a few hundred on a USB adapter. Perhaps over time it could get some wear and tear, especially at the laptop USB port. The biggest point of failure I see is the USB cable. I’m thinking the Ekahau Sidekick would hold up much better and longer than the USB adapters I previously used. I’ve squeezed myself into some tight places and have walked through some tough conditions while surveying. Though I haven’t done any drop tests of the Ekahau Sidekick, its hard-plastic housing seems very durable and rugged. This is a big improvement compared to the previous generation USB survey adapters with only 2 antennas and could be oriented in multiple directions depending on the device being used and the USB port configuration, these differences could cause large variances and skew the survey results. The less I have to deal with while walking the survey path, the quicker the survey is performed, and the more time I have to sit and analyze the captured data.Įkahau Sidekick makes use of 7 internal antennas and is designed to be worn and oriented in one direction to ensure accurate and consistent measurements. This can be a huge headache if the site survey is away from home base and you’re left with no adapter panic mode sets in.Įkahau Sidekick, however, has two enterprise-level dual-band 802.11ac Wi-Fi adapters (with 802.11ax support for site surveys) inside along with a spectrum analyzer! All this is inside just one device, and there’s only one USB cable to contend with. Once they get some wear and tear, they quickly start to become unreliable. I’ve also gone through many of these cheaper USB adapters. Sometimes the snag disconnects the adapter and then I have to redo some of the survey. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve snagged those USB adapters on a doorway while walking the survey path or when removing the laptop from my portable desk harness that I use to walk around with. That’s a lot of USB devices protruding out the sides of my laptop, and if I need all four - I have to add a USB hub too. ![]() If I’m also doing an RF spectrum scan simultaneously, I’d add one or two more USB devices. Typically, I’d use two of the old school Proxim ORiNOCO 8494 USB adapters, but those are getting rare and pricey. The internal Wi-Fi chips of laptops have varying differences between the data they capture. Finding the right Wi-Fi adapters for capturing those signals isn’t easy. I can tell you one of the most difficult parts of Wi-Fi surveying is before you even start the survey.
